The Advent wreath is the traditional Christmas centerpiece. It represents the passing of the four weeks of Advent in the Western Church's liturgical calendar. The season of Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas.

A purple (or blue) candle is lit on the First Sunday of Advent to commemorate Hope, the inspirational and encouraging hope that Christ among us represents. Another purple (or blue) candle is lit on the second Sunday of Advent to commemorate Peace, both the Prince of Peace and the promise of peace on Earth. On the Third Sunday of Advent, a pink candle is lit to commemorate Joy, either the joy that the shepherds felt when they learned of Christ's birth or the joy that God brings into our lives. As Christ's return approaches, the final purple (or blue) candle is lit on the fourth Sunday of Advent to commemorate Love, both God's boundless love for us, and our love for one another.
